Are dental implants better than dentures?

In the past dentures were the only option for dealing with tooth loss. Now many dentists are offering dental implants as a long-term solution. But what’s best?

Benefits of dentures

Dentures are removable fixtures that are designed to replace missing teeth. There are a couple of options for patients who receive dentures including complete dentures which are used when all teeth are missing and partial dentures when one or two teeth are missing. Complete dentures rest along the gums and can be secured using special denture glue. Partial dentures can be attached via clasps to natural teeth.

Dentures are a more affordable option as they are made from affordable materials and do not require surgery to insert. Dentures are also easy to modify if further tooth loss occurs.

With modern technology, dentures are now much more natural looking. Dentists can colour match the gum and tooth colour to your natural look.

Benefits of dental implants

Dental implants are made up of three parts, the titanium metal post that is inserted into the gum as a replacement of the missing tooth root, the abutment which acts as an anchor for the third section which is the crown. This make-up means that dental implants restore the full function and look of the missing tooth.

The titanium post adds a strength and durability that dentures do not have. The post will also stimulate the jawbone below the gum line which is necessary to maintain the health and function. Without stimulation the jaw bone is likely to recede, causing problems with chewing and speaking as well as an increased hollowing of the cheeks and skin.

While dental implants are the more costly option, when looked after properly they are a permanent solution. They shouldn’t need any modification or replacement and can continue to provide patients with restored function throughout their life.

Dental Implants have their own support system in place from the titanium post. This means they will not become loose and uncomfortable like dentures. They are also unaffected by the loss or damage of surrounding teeth.
